Dr. Austin W. Toresdahl was born in Santa Rosa, California, USA, and moved to Canada as a child. He grew up throughout Southern Alberta and Saskatchewan in a ranching family and completed his Honors Bachelor of Science in Chemistry at the University of Alberta in Edmonton.
He then acquired his Doctor of Optometry from the University of Waterloo in Ontario. During his training he was heavily involved in various student organizations and also attended a mission trip to provide eye care in Senegal. Throughout his education he completed clinical rotations in Calgary and Grande Prairie, Alberta. After his training he practiced in Grande Prairie, where he became adept at management of ocular injuries, pediatrics, and dry eye syndrome.
Dr. Toresdahl then practiced in an ophthalmology clinic in Chicago, IL, USA, where he honed his skills with perioperative care and diagnosing and treating complex medical eye conditions while working alongside eye surgeons. He gained experience in comanaging patients with ophthalmology subspecialties such as cornea, uveitis, pediatrics, oculoplastics, and retina. He also continued to develop his special areas of emphasis: ocular surface disease, myopia control, and specialty contact lenses.
He constantly strives to learn and improve as an eye doctor every day, both with individual study of scientific literature and regularly attending conferences where he can be exposed to new technology and ideas in medicine, eyecare, and optical. He is currently pursuing a Fellowship in the American Academy of Optometry, which requires high standards of practice and additional scholarly work. Dr. Toresdahl continues to practice as a locum doctor in rural locations and is a member of the BC and Canadian Optometric Associations. He is passionate about elevating his profession and its scope of practice to provide more and better services to patients.
Outside of the clinic you might find Dr. Toresdahl running, climbing, hiking, or road tripping, always with an audiobook or podcast in his ear. Dr. Toresdahl can conduct exams in English and basic Spanish. He is eager to provide excellent care to as many patients as possible.
